yesterday – i was 13 years old; it was 34 years ago
April 29, 1978. It was a day of distinct memories. The sound of the knock at the door… and my cousin instead of answering the door – trying to reclose it in the face of our priest. The look on his face when he entered the room where all of us cousins were. The older ones keeping us younger ones together – no adults around. We hadn’t seen or heard from the adults since they took my Dad to the hospital. It had been hours. And now we knew. I was confirmed by the look on Father Cindric’s face. My Dad had died.
It was shock & disbelief, and then the blur of activity & outpouring that happens with a funeral of a young person. Then the slow realization that nothing would ever be the same for us; my Mom and my three siblings. Today we marvel at it…. how young he was; how young we all were. We marvel that we are now all older than he ever got to become. And I honestly don’t know how my Mom did it.
My Dad was a photographer. Loved photography. We have trays of slides of beautiful locations travelled while he was in the Airforce. My favorite is a time-lapse multiple exposure of the moon taken over a nights time. I can’t imagine how hard that was to do… how many attempts it took…. how much film never seen. When I think of me trying to set up my tripod in the backyard and just doing a long exposure of the stars… it usually involves swearing and frustration. And I can’t help think where’d I’d be with photography today if I had my dad around. I have his Argus, and his Petri, some lenses and filters; but not his advice, his guidance, his experience.
When I purchased my chris taylor fotografs web domain. I also purchased the name ‘tommys daughter’. Wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it. Still not. But I did – and that was 4 years ago. Lately I’ve been using it as a separate unseen sight used to test out a new website layout. You all will start seeing it from time to time soon – and I’ll be flipping back & forth between the two sites for a couple of months til I get everything in one spot. So don’t be alarmed and thing you’re no longer on my site if you see the newer name in your browser bar. My Dad’s name is Tom. To his mother he was Tommy. No one else was allowed to call him Tommy. I thought breifly of naming Emmery ‘Tommie’ – would have been so fitting for my tom-girl. But we didn’t… and I have my ‘tommysdaughter’ site.
This just seemed like an appropriate time to tell the story.
Tommy’s daughter. Me. a photographer.

typical crazy spring weather…..
for those of us in the western PA area…. this shouldn’t really be too much of a surprise. Spring time weather can be all over the place…
But remember just last Sunday… 70 some degrees… and humid! And today… we’re hearing we may get snow tomorrow!
Keep warm my friends… and here’s a little reminder of what last weekend looked like!
OK… this is sad.
I haven’t updated my site in forever!! I was just getting ready to post some beautiful new spring shots… when I realized I hadn’t posted anything since January! Really?
And even before that… I wasn’t doing such a good job of getting things posted. I have so many Bea U ti ful pics that I did not get up… so
SO…. here goes… doing a little mini- recap of the end of summer & fall last year. A bit of a photo dump of gorgeousness and fun!
some seniors… some new babes… some gettin ready for new babes… some weddings & engagements …. some families… some sunny fields…. some little ones & some little ones with first birthdays… a little bit of everything!
you know how ….
things get a little bit crazy right before the Holidays?…. and something’s gotta give…
sometimes it’s the holiday cards… ( has been for me for the last two years!)
well this is a fabulous idea. A Happy New Year card!
Think about it…. they can go out in those nice calm weeks right after all the craziness…. I think it’s a wonderful idea, especially for someone who’s running their own business – and does a lot of gift sales — which my friend, Tabitha does — see her work on etsy at Missy Mae Tutus – link under things i like
So – we did a New Year! shots for her family ….. just love this idea
Usually Tabitha is the Crafter(craft maker) not the Craftee (craft recipient) … but in this case she is the Craftee. Lovely hats made by my very own S-I-L…. Cristin …. her Etsy shop (hopefully) coming soon!
